About Conair's Line of Portable and Central Chillers

A chiller is a heat-transfer device that uses mechanical refrigeration to remove heat from a process load and transfers the heat to the environment. Chillers are used by plastics processors when they need a lower process fluid temperature than a simpler system, such as a cooling tower, can provide.

From easily portable chillers to large capacity central chillers, Conair has a range of options that are rich with features to ensure dependability, energy savings, easy setup, and even advanced monitoring.

Choosing a Chiller

When choosing a chiller, you'll need to identify:

  • PORTABLE CHILLER OR CENTRAL CHILLER?
    • Portable chillers are typically smaller in capacity (30-40 tons or less), simpler in overall design, and lower in installed cost.  Equipped with caster wheels, they are easy to move, easy to connect (using flexible hoses), and easy to power up.

    • Central chillers are generally larger in capacity, more complex in design, higher in energy efficiency, and higher in installed cost. The key advantage of a central chiller system is that it can handle multiple, large and variable process loads that require cooling water of roughly the same temperature.

For more information, read "Portable Chillers Versus Central Chillers: Which is Best?"

  • AIR COOLED CHILLER OR WATER COOLED CHILLER?
    • Water cooled chillers are the better choice when you're looking to minimize operating costs and can invest in systems and facilities for a long period of time, but they have higher initial costs because they require a circulating tower system with additional pumps, piping, and tanks.

    • Air cooled chillers are often chosen because of their lower initial investment, they require fewer components to build and operate, their installation is faster, and they eliminate any water cost/quality/conservation concerns

For more information, read "The Differences Between Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled Chillers" on the Conair Blog.

  • WHAT SIZE CHILLER DO I NEED?
To size a chiller to meet your requirements, you’ve got to calculate the tonnage (chilling capacity) required to deliver the lowest required water temperature to your “process heat load.”  You can learn more about this and view sizing guidelines in our Chiller Sizing Blog.
